surrealism: Sunday Dalí: An Allegory of an American Christmas, 1934. Oil on canvas. Despite our American post-9/11 mentality, the airplane flying into the egg is not a premonition of the terrorist attack. The egg is a symbol of fertility, and, in this case, it symbolizes Dalí’s new-found influx of creativity following his immigration to America. Many artists fled Europe at this time as tension was rising between Hitler’s Germany and the rest of Europe. Most of these artists, including Dalí, settled in New York City propelling the city in front of Paris to the forefront of the art world.
